Making us in his image and likeness qualified us to be upright. Regenerating us by his Spirit, restored us back to this status after we lost it.

Here two opposing things are being pitched, one against the other: uprightness and going after many schemes. We also see God exonerating himself by declaring that “He made us upright”. What it means is that, if we are not able to meet his standard, he cannot be blamed. Again, going after many schemes is a sure way of losing ones uprightness.

Maintain your uprightness; avoid going after many schemes.
